    What is Applied Kinesiology?

Everything in the universe can be scientifically defined in terms of energy. This means that everything contains an energetic frequency (often measured in Hertz "Hz"), from inanimate rocks to the living bodies of every species. Even those things that we can't see (oxygen, for example) is made up of energy.

Our energetic bodies respond to any and all energetic frequencies that we come into contact with. Applied Kinesiology is a scientific method used to gain feedback about the body's reactions to contact with these energetic frequencies. It must be understood that each of our bodies has a very intricate electrical biosystem. This system works much the same way as a standard electrical circuit. It is possible that these energetic responses may provide more intelligent and accurate feedback than the logical mind.

The technical definition of Applied Kinesiology is: An educational bioenergetic model utilizing muscle testing and/or monitoring as a tool to obtain feedback from the body.

When your energy field is increased (a positive feedback), there is an immediate and temporary increase in your physical muscle strength.

However, when your energy field is decreased (a negative feedback), there is an immediate and temporary decrease in your physical muscle strength.

    What is "Frequency"?

Frequency is a measurable rate of electrical energy that is constant between any 2 points. It is measured in megahertz, and essential oils range from 52 to 320 MHz. Frequencies of essential oils have been measured and studied by Tanio Technologies in Washington with a biofrequency monitor.

Lower frequencies relate to physical form. Middle frequencies relate to emotional concerns. Higher frequencies relate to spiritual concerns. Human cells begin to mutate at 62 MHz. Negative thoughts will lower a frequency by 12 MHz and positive thoughts will raise a frequency by 10 MHz. Prayer and meditation have shown to raise frequencies by 15 MHz.

According to Dr. Royal R. Rife, every disease has a frequency. However, a substance with a higher frequency will destroy a disease of lower frequency. Clinical research shows that essential oils have the highest frequency of any substance known to man, creating an environment in which disease, bacteria, viruses, fungus, etc., cannot live.

    Frequency Chart

Another part of this same study measured the frequency reaction of the human body to the introduction of coffee—using two male adults, the first a 26 year old and the second a 24 year old, both were measured at 66 MHz. The first individual held a cup of coffee (without drinking any) and his frequency dropped to 58 MHz in 3 seconds. He then removed the coffee and inhaled an aroma of essential oils. Within 21 seconds, his frequency had returned to 66 MHz. The second individual took a sip of coffee and his frequency dropped to 52 MHz in the same 3 seconds. However, no essential oils were used during the recovery time and it took 3 days for his frequency to return back to the initial 66 MHz.

Human Brain 72-90 MHz. Human Body (day) 62-68 MHz. Cold Symptoms 58 MHz. Flu Symptoms 57 MHz. Canidida 55 MHz. Epstein Barr 52 MHz. Cancer 42 MHz. Death Begins 25 MHz. Processed/Canned food up to 15 MHz. Dry Herbs 12-22 MHz. Fresh Herbs 20-27 MHz. Essential Oils 52-320 MHz.

    The Muscle Test

Now we know that everything around us contains electrical energy, and that the electrical energy in our bodies can intertwine and become influenced by the energy of the things around us, we're ready to try a simple muscle test. The purpose of the muscle test is to determine the energetic changes (positive/negative or stronger/weaker) in your body while interacting with certain objects that contain different energy frequencies.

What you'll need to perform this test is: (1) a fresh apple, (2) a bottle of toxic chemical house cleaner (bleach, tile cleaner, etc.), and (3) a quiet area free from distractions.

    1. Set the apple and the bottle of cleaner on a table within reach (but do not place them too close to each other).
    2. Stand straight (but do NOT lock your knees, stay soft in your body) and close your eyes. Focus on how the energy in your body feels.
    3. Now, pick up the apple and hold it in your hand, close your eyes again. You will feel a shift in energy through your body (you may feel as though your body is being pulled forward or backward, or grounded toward the floor, etc.) Try to focus on how this feels.
    4. Now, set the apple down and pick up the bottle of toxic cleaner. Close your eyes again and focus on how this feels. The energetic frequency in your body will shift again.

What do you Learn from the Muscle Test?

The main thing you want to learn from the above test is how your body responds to a positive energy field (the apple) versus how it responds to a negative energy field (the toxic cleaner). The above muscle test is a "baseline" test that should be used first, each time, before you muscle test other substances such as essential oils... until you are very aware and comfortable with knowing for sure how your body feels when interacting with positive versus negative energy.

Once you begin to understand how your body responds to various electrical energy fields, you can then begin to listen to what your body is "telling you" to determine if something is going to be beneficial (strengthening) or harmful (weakening) to your body when contact is made.

We used the apple in this exercise because fresh produce contains a positive energy field and is the main building blocks of health in humans when consumed. The toxic cleaner was selected for this test because the energy field is very negative, and the contents can be deadly if consumed. The drastic difference in energy between these two items will help you to learn how to differentiate between positive and negative energy.

Although this is only one form of muscle testing, I'll describe another method of muscle testing in the "Using Muscle Testing in Daily Life" section below.

But first, let's use this test on essential oils...

Using Muscle Testing with Essential Oils

Now, set out several essential oils on the table and perform the same muscle testing that you did as described above. You may even get more accurate results if you are not looking at the labels, but rather picking a random bottle and "listening" to how the energy systems in your body interact with the energy of the bottle of oil.

Think again of the changes in your body's energy from the previous test. If your energy, for example, pulled your body forward (you may have felt like your body was tipping forward) when holding the apple, but pulled your energy backward when holding the toxic cleaner, then you know that the pull forward is a positive/strengthening feel and pulling backward is a negative/weakening feel. Pay attention when doing the muscle tests, as these "feelings" can reverse or change. So, first always perform your "baseline" test as described above.

By listening to the energy changes in your body that take place as a result of interacting with the oils, you should be able to easily determine which essential oil will be most helpful to you for application.

There have been many times where I think I might need one of 2 different oils (for example, Lavender and Peppermint), but I'm not sure which one I should apply. Rather than applying both of them, I might try a muscle test to determine which one will make the most positive change to my body's energy field. If I feel a more positive change when holding the bottle of Lavender, than I may only need to use that single oil for application.

Using Muscle Testing in Daily Life

Muscle testing can be used on nearly everything. You can muscle test the food you eat, the water you drink, and even the toothpaste you purchase from the store. The more you use muscle testing, the more you'll begin to allow your body's energy field to intimately interact only with those things that would strengthen it.

In addition to the form of muscle testing above, there are several other ways to use muscle testing. One of these ways is by asking verbal questions. Begin by standing straight (again, not locking your knees, stay soft in your body) and focus on how your energy feels. Ask a yes or no question out loud, such as, "Is my name Cheryl Sutor?" (yes... a silly question, but it works well as a "baseline" test). Your body's energy field will respond either positively or negatively. In this case, for me, my body would respond positively. For you, it should respond negatively, because your name is not Cheryl Sutor.

After your baseline test, you can ask nearly any yes/no question you can think of. "Should I eat the apple?" No. "Should I eat the banana?" Yes. Your energy will respond and you will know which food, the apple or the banana will best suit you at that moment, energetically.

How does this work when your energy field is not physically touching the energy field of the thing you are asking about? There are many scientific theories. The most popular tends to be that your subconscious remembers the previous energy interactions with those objects and responds accordingly. So, if your body's energy system is not in need of an apple, it is able to tell you so.

Another theory is that thoughts carry an energy field (and physical frequency) of their own. This can explain why you can feel a sudden surge of positive, strengthening energy when entering a room where there are people who love you or care deeply about you. You can also experience a sudden and drastic decline in energy and strength when people are having negative thoughts about you. We have all experienced this.

Yet another theory that has been made by some advanced researchers, such as David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D., author of Power vs. Force, that Applied Kinesiology not only offers direct access into the individual subconscious, but also direct access to a collective consciousness, similar to the Jungian idea of the collective unconscious. Extensive research conducted by Dr. Hawkins indicates that accuracy of responses is not limited to the particular individual doing the muscle testing.

Although we are not clear on all the answers, this area of science is beginning to attract a lot of attention by scientists and researchers. Below, you'll find several more recent books and videos on the topic that may clarify kinesiology and muscle testing even further, as many of these scientists have conducted extensive studies on the energetic reactions between objects, thoughts, and intention. One scientist even found that water crystals respond positively or negatively to thoughts, music, printed words, etc. and that water can retain these energetic properties. Very interesting stuff, and worth digging into if it interests you...

    Personal Experiences with Muscle Testing

While I was attending an equine (hoof trimming) class, I met a woman who was very excited about the uses and applications of essential oils, and she invited me to attend a workshop on the 12 Oils of Ancient Scripture. In this workshop, we were introduced to the 12 different essential oils that were most often cited in ancient scripture. At this point, I had already learned a little about muscle testing and thought this would be the perfect place to put my newfound muscle testing knowledge to the test. As each oil was spoken about, it was passed around the room so that each participant could interact with it, smell it, apply it, etc. Very quickly, all 12 bottles of oil were circulating around the room, with the workshop participants "checking them out".

I chose to use muscle testing, instead of the popular "smell the oil" method that was sweeping the room. As each oil came to me, I would allow the person next to me to hand it to me, but without looking at the label. I was previously told that this would give me the most accurate energetic reading (by not allowing my logical mind to interact!) If I felt no energy change in my body while holding the bottle of oil in my hand, I simply passed it on to the next person without knowing which oil it was.

Finally, the 10th or 11th bottle of oil was passed to me. The instant this bottle hit my hand, I felt this incredible surge of energy run straight up through my arm to my heart. I had never felt anything like this in my life. I opened my eyes and saw the bottle of Cypress oil looking back at me. I opened the bottle and sniffed and I really didn't like the smell at all. "Too bad", I thought! But, this surging feeling of energy kept flowing through me. So, I decided to purchase the bottle of cypress essential oil, not knowing what I would eventually use it for, just that I needed it.

When I got home, I sat holding that little bottle of essential oil for the longest time. I muscle tested, I asked questions about how I should use it, and eventually came to the conclusion that it was to be applied topically on my wrists.

Amazingly enough, within one minute of application, my previously numb, swollen hands (a result of over-torqueing my hands and wrists while working) began to "tingle" like pins and needles. It actually hurt a bit, in an annoying way... like when your arm falls asleep and is beginning to waking up and tingle. Within five minutes, my hands were no longer swollen and no longer numb. I was completely floored.

I continued to use Cypress oil at work, in-between jobs, and at night time before falling asleep for approximately 1 year. It has now been 4 years since I've had to use Cypress essential oil on my wrists and although my workload has increased by 3x the amount I had 4 years ago, I continue to have no problems with my wrists. Without muscle testing, this small roadblock in my career would not have been removed!

Another story I can share with you on muscle testing is about a client of mine who couldn't seem to get away from the "horse show jitters". Every time she'd try to compete in a horse show, her nerves and worries would get the best of her and the result would be nearly disastrous. She was desperate to get over this problem and asked me if I though essential oils would help. Well, of course they would!

When I arrived at her farm, I gave her a brief introduction to muscle testing and asked her to perform a baseline muscle test. At this point, she really wasn't a believer in muscle testing, but she agreed to keep going just for fun. So, I proceded to hand her one bottle of essential oil at a time, without her being able to view the bottle labels and without knowing what oil she was holding, she was to ask the question "Do I need this oil?" and she would listen to her body's energetic feedback.

For good measure, I had her holding bottles like Lemon, Orange, Oregano, etc... oils that I didn't think she would need at all for the specific problem she was trying to conquer. I also handed her oils that I thought would be very helpful, and many of them her body's energetic feedback told her a strong "No". After muscle testing 20-30 different oils, her energetic feedback had given her a solid "Yes" to only 2 of them.

When she was done, she turned around to view the 2 bottles of oil that her body's energy field responded positively to. Guess what the oils were called.... "Believe" and "Peace & Calming". Both were essential oil blends created by D. Gary Young (president of Young Living) with the sole purpose of strengthening and enhancing positive emotional feelings. We both stood there, amazed at our ability to "feel" energy changes in our body as a result of holding the bottles of oils.

She went on to use those 2 oil blends during her next horse show, and reported back to me that they worked magnificently, and both her and her horse performed in a relaxed and alert manner. The great news is that this horse show resulted in better dressage test scores than she had ever gotten before, and she has continued to improve at each show she has attended since.

I'd also like to share a story where I had used the second form of muscle testing that I described above in the "Using Muscle Testing in Daily Life" section above. I was attending a summer barn BBQ party at a stable that I wasn't very familiar with (it was the barn my friend rode at), and about 2 hours into the party, I suddenly felt like I had been hit by a truck. I felt tired and fatigued, and my mind and eyesight became a little hazy. I began to have negative and depressing thoughts. It was like something had completely zapped the energy right out of me.

I looked around, trying to find something that was just "not right", something to blame for the horrible feelings I had at that moment. I found nothing. So, I asked my friend to take me for a drive. We got in his car and spent about 20 minutes aimlessly driving around the country roads while I told him how I was feeling, and how I just couldn't understand why. It was such a strong feeling that I couldn't ignore it. Pretty quickly, I began to feel much better and we decided that we'd return to the party.

When we arrived back at the party, there were only a few people left... how strange. We asked the few who were left what happened to everyone. It turns out that right after we left to go driving around, one of the boarders at the part had competely "blown her top", yelling and screaming at the barn manager, throwing things. I'm not going to get into details, but I hear it was pretty nasty and the whole fight ended up with several of the other boarders getting involved and upset at each other, and one of them peeling out of the gravel driveway in their car. The party crashed... hard and fast... and so did everyone who attended.

I suddenly realized what had happened to me. My energy system had picked up on the energy of every other person at this party. My logical mind saw a bunch of horse people having a good time (funny how people can easily fake it!) and I tried so hard to stay and have a good time with them. However, my energy was telling me otherwise. It was telling me to get the heck out of there to avoid an energetic wreck. And I did. Lesson learned.

The reason that I am sharing this story is so that you understand that, although I have laid out the steps for muscle testing in this article, you do not always need to follow them. You do not always need to hold an object or ask a question... you just pay attention to your energetic system at all times. There certainly are times when listening to your energetic instincts would not be a good idea (for example, you may decide that dealing with your dreaded in-law may not be better for you, energetically, but that it is better for the family energy as a whole when you "put up" with them in a positive way). And, there are times when listening to your energetic responses to the things around you can save your life. Just pay attention and, over time, your judgement on these decisions will become clearer and more precise.
