Case Study: Spirit, underrun heels, flat feet, flares

This Paint mare had flat feet, massive over-laid bar, flaring, chipping, white line separation and underrun heels. After just a few months, the mare has begun to develop some nice concavity in the sole, chipping and flaring has stopped and heels are no longer underrun. Her contracted heels have also expanded. The white line separation should completely grow out over a course of the next couple trims.

Lifestyle: Daily turnout, trail horse.

Underrun heels, overlaid bar, flaring and white line separation, flat soles, chipped wall, contracted heels, pinched heel bulbs, long toe, bulging hairline in the quarters, thin soles, toe wall is convex, toe angle is too shallow to support the limb, infection in sulcus of frog.

July 3, 2004 -- AFTER Trimming

For the first trim, I trimmed the heels to place them further back under the bulbs and base of the limb, relieved pressure on the overlaid bars to allow sole to grow in thicker and callous, relieved pressure in the wall at the quarters and rounded off the jagged hoof walls.

October 14, 2004 -- AFTER Trimming

Three months and three trims later, Spirit's heels are growing in much straighter, are no longer underrun, and heels have spread wider. Her soles are thicker, bars are not overlaid, heel bulbs are relaxing and no longer pinched, toe angle has become steeper to support the limb, the hoof has stopped chipping, and she is now beginning to build a toe callous. The infection in her frog is clearing up, healthy tissue is growing in. The bulged up hairline in the quarters has relaxed and is almost straight. The overall shape of her hoof is more round, and less "slipper footed". She has also gained a few more millimeters of concavity in her soles.

She is now sound for trail riding. Over time, as the hoof wall grows out (from top to bottom), the remaining hoof wall flaring and white line separation will close up (approximately 5-6 more months).
