Sammy experienced hoof problems and lameness for over 10 years. Several farriers tried to make her sound with shoes, pads and barefoot trims without success. According to her stance, movement and hoof form, her left fore was indicative of navicular disease and her right fore was indicating past bouts with laminitis and/or founder. After just one trim to rebalance her hooves, she has been completely sound ever since.

Lifestyle: 24/7 Pasture with herdmates, free choice grass/hay, used for pleasure riding and as a broodmare.

December 20, 2002 -- BEFORE Trimming

Sammy's left fore shows typical signs of navicular disease... contracted heels, slipper footed, long toe, atrophied frog, and underrun heels. She also shows a medial/lateral imbalance and a stubborn toe crack that wouldn't grow out.

December 20, 2002 -- AFTER Trimming

For the first trim, I lowered the heels to help with decontraction and to rebalance the hoof. I also rebalanced the foot medial/laterally and trimmed her bars low to rule out any possible navicular pain caused by them. I finished by trimming back and rounding off the outer wall to prevent flaring and to help the white line separation to close up. In these pictures you can see how much less strain there is on the pasterns.

Immediately after the first trim, Sammy became 100% sound on her feet and was really "striding-out", even when ridden on the pavement, of which she hadn't been able to do for a long time. She has remained sound ever since.
