This Arab mare had previously foundered and had frequent bouts of laminitis, causing lameness. Take notice of the postural differences in the before and after pictures. Before her first trim, all four legs were camped under her body, with her back tense and neck upright. Immediately after her first trim, the placing of her feet is more vertical and her body is much more relaxed, with a slightly lifted back and relaxed head and neck.

Lifestyle: 24/7 Pasture, used for therapeutic riding.




March 26, 2003 -- BEFORE Trimming

High heels, excessive length, toe wall angle too steep, flaring, bulging of the hairline in the quarters, dipping of hairline at the toe, concave toe wall. Poor posture: swayed back, high head and tense topline, all four legs camped under her body.

    March 26, 2003 -- AFTER Trimming

    For this trim, I lowered her heels, and trimmed her flared wall back. I did minimal trimming on the sole and bars, since that was the healthiest area of her hoof. The postural changes in her body indicate a release of discomfort: topline has relaxed and all four hooves are placed more under her limbs. She is weighting her heels now without discomfort. (The black marks on her hooves are from a magic marker I used to illustrate some points to the owner).
